KC vs. Texas BBQ – Our Top Pick!

We tried several top rated BBQ joints in the Kansas City and the Dallas/Ft Worth area – here is what we experienced and our top picks!

#5 – Hayward’s Pit BBQ – Shawnee, KS – This place was in a quiet residential area and had a pretty cool interior vibe and friendly staff, but I would have to say that the BBQ was kind of run of the mill. We cleared our plates, but left just a little bit under satisfied.

#4 – Slap’s BBQ– Kansas City – This place was really good. Before we went to KC, a friend asked if we could bring some Slaps BBQ back for him (it had made such a good impression). Well, we weren’t able to bring any back to MN, but we made a special trip to experience it for ourselves. Line was long, but the smells were awesome! When we made it inside, we were able to order a drink while we finished waiting. We tried a variety of the meats and all was up to expectations! Highly recommend stopping in.

#3 – Q39 – Best Ribs in KC! I know that’s a pretty bold statement. We were targeting the brisket and burnt ends, but the ribs stole the show! They were super moist and tender with an awesome smokiness. With all of the options that we had available, we went back to this place for a 2nd visit they were that good!

#2 – The Original Roy Hutchins Barbeque – Fort Worth Texas. Get the Brisket! The line was long, but it was worth it! Great selection and a bit spendy, but I guess you get what you pay for. Highly recommend this place! Side note – RFK Jr. was actually here and slicing up brisket a couple of hours before we came!

#1 – Cattleack Barbeque – Dallas – The first Michelin Guide recognized BBQ that we’ve had and it was really, really good, and for us you can probably tell that we think Texas BBQ beats KC as out Top 2 picks are both ahead of the 3 KC joints. We arrived early (before they opened and there was already a line outside, so go early and still be prepared for a wait. The guy in front of us in line got a take-away feast that everyone was jealous of. You will not go away hungry either. Great portions and fantastic sauce to go with everything.
