High End Weekend Chicago’s Fulton Market – Saturday

Lunch on Saturday we were planning on Au Chevale and their famous burger, but they were closed for remodeling so we checked out Billy Goat Tavern for a bit of old SNL nostalgia. Burger hit the spot in a greasy spoon kind of way. Dinner on Saturday night was the expected highlight of the trip with a visit to Smyth – Chicago’s most recent 3 Michelin Star restaurant. It was really an experience highlighted with over the top fantastic service. 18 course tasting menu accompanied by wine pairing made it somewhat of a marathon, but we were a bit blown away by the experience.
I would have to say that the food was super creative and inspired, but not quite as enjoyable as I would have expected. A couple of the courses had very sour tasting notes which made it a bit challenging, and there was a lack of sweet finish to the desert courses. Overall, I’m glad that we went and made it a special night, but I would probably gravitate more towards Bib Gourmand rated restaurants (rather than starred) to get a great food experience at a more reasonable price point.
